Maudslay's screw-cutting lathe, made in c. 1797. The bed consisted of two triangular bars (a), which were attached to the cast brass feet (b). The saddle (c) with its cross-slide was driven by a lead-screw (d). (e) Headstock (one of the parts of a lathe which support the workpiece; through the headstock runs a rotatable shaft, the spindle. (f) Tailstock, The workpiece was given the desired length in advance. It was also given centres, into which the points on (e) and (f) were inserted.
